Islet Product Information
Islets, the cells responsible for the production of insulin, make up 1-2% of the pancreas. They sense the amount of sugar in the blood and correspondingly release the appropriate amount of insulin to maintain normal sugar levels in the body. Type 1 diabetes occurs when a person’s immune system mistakenly destroys these islet cells.
Through research intravenous injection of isolated islet cells has proven effective in reversing diabetes, and the demand for islets remains greater than the current availability. Research to develop options such as genetically engineered islets, islet expansion and regeneration is ongoing throughout the world.
